Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
